How is the PTE Writing section graded?

The PTE (Pearson Test of English) Writing section is designed to assess a test-taker’s ability to produce written English in an academic context. This section consists of two tasks: “Summarize Written Text” and “Write Essay.” Each task is scored based on specific criteria, and the overall score for the Writing section is determined by the combined performance on these tasks.

  1. Summarize Written Text:

– In this task, test-takers are required to read a passage and summarize it in one sentence within 10 minutes.

– The response is scored based on content, form, grammar, vocabulary, and overall coherence and conciseness.

– Scores range from 0 to 3, with higher scores indicating better performance.

  1. Write Essay:

– Test-takers are given 20 minutes to write an essay in response to a prompt.

– The essay is scored based on various criteria, including content, development, structure, coherence, form, and grammar.

– Scores for the essay range from 0 to 5, with higher scores reflecting stronger writing skills.

Scoring Criteria:

Content: The relevance, depth, and development of the ideas presented in the response.

Form: The structure and organization of the response, including the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.

Grammar: The accuracy and appropriateness of grammar and sentence structures used in the written response.

Vocabulary: The range and precision of vocabulary employed in the response.

Coherence: The logical flow and connection of ideas within the response, ensuring clarity and coherence.

The scores for the individual tasks are then combined to provide an overall score for the Writing section. The overall score for the Writing section contributes to the test-taker’s general performance in the PTE Academic exam.

To perform well in the Writing section, test-takers should focus on expressing their ideas clearly, using appropriate grammar and vocabulary, and structuring their responses in a cohesive and organized manner. Practicing with sample prompts and receiving feedback on written responses can be beneficial in honing the skills necessary for success in the PTE Writing section.
