How is the total score for the PTE Academic exam calculated?

The PTE Academic test employs a detailed scoring system that assesses a candidate’s English language proficiency across four main skills: Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening. Each skill is scored on a scale from 10 to 90 points, and the overall score is the sum of these individual scores.

  1. Speaking:  The scoring is based on oral fluency, pronunciation, content, and grammatical accuracy. A high level of proficiency in pronunciation and fluency contributes to a higher score.
  1. Writing:  In the Writing section, candidates are assessed on their ability to produce written English in an academic context. The scoring considers content, grammatical range and accuracy, spelling, and written discourse. Proper organization of ideas, clarity, and coherence in writing are crucial for a good score.
  1. Reading:  The Reading section measures a candidate’s ability to understand written English in an academic setting. Scoring factors include reading comprehension, vocabulary usage, and understanding of the relationship between different parts of a text. Candidates are evaluated on how well they extract key information and comprehend the main ideas of the text.
  1. Listening:  The Listening section assesses a test-taker’s ability to understand spoken English in various contexts. Scoring is based on the understanding of the main ideas, supporting details, tone, and the ability to follow the development of ideas. Accurate comprehension of spoken information is crucial for a high score in this section.

Calculation of Overall Score: The overall PTE Academic score is the sum of the individual scores in the four skills, with each skill contributing equally to the total. The overall score ranges from 10 to 90 points, where 10 points represent a minimal proficiency level and 90 points indicate an expert level of English proficiency.

Additionally, the PTE Academic test also provides sub-scores for enabling skills – grammar, oral fluency, pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary, and written discourse. These sub-scores offer a more detailed analysis of a candidate’s strengths and weaknesses within each skill.

Understanding the scoring criteria is essential for test-takers to focus their preparation on specific areas that need improvement. Regular practice, familiarity with the test format, and attention to the scoring criteria contribute to achieving a higher overall score in the PTE Academic test.
